Movement Matters: Staying Active Supports Breast Cancer Recovery

Breast cancer treatment takes a toll. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally.

​But here’s something encouraging: gentle, regular movement can help you feel better—both during and after treatment. New research from the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress 2024 shows that staying active helps lower fatigue, ease anxiety, and lift your mood. Even more powerful? Regular movement may reduce the risk of recurrence and improve long-term survival.

You don’t need to train for a marathon. Engaging in moderate activity for 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week, can make a significant difference. Our friends have shared some ideas that you could use:
  • Walking around your neighbourhood
  • Stretching in your living room
  • Light strength training using resistance bands

If you’ve had chemo, wait at least 48 hours before getting active. Start slowly. A 10-minute walk or a gentle yoga session is a great place to begin.

Tailored exercise programs—especially those that include light resistance training—offer the best results. But you don’t need fancy equipment or a fitness centre. Here are a few suggestions from our friends:
  • Fitness apps designed for cancer recovery
  • Virtual coaching or check-ins with a rehab specialist

Before starting something new, check in with your oncologist for safe, effective ways to move based on your energy and comfort level. Start small. Stay consistent. Your body—and your recovery—will thank you.
