Movement Matters: Staying Active Supports Breast Cancer Recovery

9/19/2025

Picture
Breast cancer treatment takes a toll. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally.

But here’s something encouraging: gentle, regular movement can help you feel better—both during and after treatment. New research from the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress 2024 shows that staying active helps lower fatigue, ease anxiety, and lift your mood. Even more powerful? Regular movement may reduce the risk of recurrence and improve long-term survival.

You don’t need to train for a marathon. Engaging in moderate activity for 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week, can make a significant difference. Our friends have shared some ideas that you could use:
  • Walking around your neighbourhood
  • Stretching in your living room
  • Light strength training using resistance bands

If you’ve had chemo, wait at least 48 hours before getting active. Start slowly. A 10-minute walk or a gentle yoga session is a great place to begin.

Tailored exercise programs—especially those that include light resistance training—offer the best results. But you don’t need fancy equipment or a fitness centre. Here are a few suggestions from our friends:
  • Fitness apps designed for cancer recovery
  • Virtual coaching or check-ins with a rehab specialist

Before starting something new, check in with your oncologist for safe, effective ways to move based on your energy and comfort level. Start small. Stay consistent. Your body—and your recovery—will thank you.

By Donna Taylor, Comfort & Confidence Specialist
When shopping for a wig, understanding the key components can help you choose the right one for your needs.
Here’s a breakdown of the basic construction options we carry.
  • Wefted Caps: Rows of hair are sewn into strips by machine.
  • Fully Hand-Tied Caps: Each hair is hand-tied into a stretchy mesh for comfort and flexibility.
Different top materials offer varying levels of realism, durability, and comfort:
  • Mono Tops: The most realistic, mimicking a natural scalp, affordable and durable.
  • Monto top with Lace Front: Lightweight and breathable, ideal for those who want a natural hairline.
Choosing the right wig depends on your needs, lifestyle, and styling preferences.

Holiday Cheer and Cancer Care: Tips for Navigating the Season

12/11/2024

Picture
The holiday season can be overwhelming for anyone, but for those undergoing cancer treatment, it can be especially challenging. It's important to manage your energy and not overexert yourself while still embracing the festive spirit.

Here are my tips for navigating the holidays during cancer treatment include:

  • Surround yourself with loved ones, whether through physical gatherings or virtual connections.
  • Modify your traditions to reduce stress. For example, delegate hosting duties or opt for a potluck meal.
  • Delegate shopping and decorating to family members who are helpful and empathetic.
  • Clear your travel plans with your physician.
  • Seek out a trusted confidant or counselor to help manage stress. Emotional support has never been this crucial.
  • If you're able to eat, indulge in holiday foods in moderation to maintain nutrition without overloading your digestive system.
  • Ensure that your activities incorporate ample downtime. Rest is vital, as fatigue is a common side effect of cancer treatments.
Lastly, communicate openly with your doctor to tailor your treatment schedule to accommodate holiday plans and address any new or concerning side effects.
